چکیده: Abstract: Nowadays surface modification methods and methodes used for improving tools' performance are widely used in many advanced industries, due to their inexpensive cost. One of the most efficient and useful surface modification methods is shot peening. Shot peening has a very important role in increasing fatigue life and decreasing components' failure through introducing plastic deformation and compressive residual stresses on surface and depth of components. Two useful shot peening methods which are being used often are conventional shot peening and ultrasonic shot peening. Due to numerous applications of these methods and the fact that no comprehensive research is done to compare residual stresses fields caused by each method, in this research a comparison between residual stresses fields caused by both conventional shot peening and ultrasonic shot peening has been accomplished to partly improve this issue. In this study, for ultrasonic shot peening the residual stresses field has been measured in three different sizes by both forms of experimental methods and finite element simulation. Conventional shot peening has been also studied with the same shot size as in ultrasonic shot peening by two different coverages in forms of experiments and finite element simulation. All the shot peenings have been done on 2024-T351 aluminum alloy. Experimental measurements of residual stresses have been done with ICHD method. Among all the accomplished shot peenings the maximum residual stresses have been caused by the biggest shot in ultrasonic shot peening, Also in the comparison which has been done between ultrasonic shot peening and conventional shot peening by the same shot with 100% coverage, the residual stresses fields produced by both shot peening methods were almost equal but the surface roughness created by ultrasonic method was very lower
