As reported by BASNA and according to the Islamic World Science Citation Center (ISC), Dr. Dehqani, President of ISC stated: "Leiden is an authentic university evaluation systems which evaluates and ranks the top universities of the world based on authentic scientometric indicators annually. In 2020, universities of the world were ranked by Leiden system based on 20 indicators in the form of four general categories, namely scientific impact, scientific diplomacy, open access to publishing, and gender diversity. These evaluations were carried out according to the scientific productions of the universities between 2015 and 2018 as documented in Web of Science website".
Category of scientific impact utilized indicators including top 1% articles, top 5% articles, top 10% articles, and top 50% articles.
"In the scientific diplomacy category, indicators such as scientific collaboration, international collaboration, industrial collaboration, scientific collaboration from less than 100 kilometers of geographical distance, and scientific collaboration from more than 5000 kilometers of geographical distance were considered", President of ISC added.
Dehqani said: "Open access to publications was calculated based on the number of open access publications, gold open access publications, hybrid open access publications, bronze open access publications, and green open access publications of the university".
He added: "Gender diversity included indicators of collaboration with authors whose gender is unknown, male authors (as a proportion of the total number of authors), female authors (as a proportion of the total number of authors), male authors (as a proportion of the total number of male and female authors), and female authors (as a proportion of the total number of male and female authors)".

President of ISC observed: "Leiden Ranking, unlike other ranking systems of the world, does not calculate a single rank for the universities included in its ranking; rather, universities are ranked in all of the indicators and criteria of the Leiden system. Therefore, one of the features of Leiden Ranking is that it does not allocate a total ranking to the universities based on all indicators and their respective weightings; rather, Leiden calculates and publishes the points and rankings of the universities separately for each indicator".
Iranian Universities in Leiden Ranking
Dr. Dehqani stipulated: "The number of Iranian universities in Leiden Ranking has increased each year. The following chart demonstrates the growth of the number of Iranian universities in the Leiden Ranking".
Leiden 2020 Ranking
President of ISC stated: "Like last years, Iran is the top Islamic country in this ranking in terms of the number of top universities with 36 universities. Turkey and Egypt with 30 and 7 universities are in the second and third rank respectively. In the following table, the number of universities of the Islamic countries ranked in the Leiden system is demonstrated.
"In 2020, University of Tehran, Amir Kabir University of Technology, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tarbiat Modares, Sharif University of Technology, Iran University of Science and Technology, Isfahan University of Technology, Ferdowsi University of Mashsad, Shiraz University, Tabriz University, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Shahid Beheshti University, Islamic Azad University Science and Research Branch, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, K. N. Toosi University of Technology, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Isfahan University, Guilan University, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Kashan University, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Semnan University, Iran University of Medical Sciences, Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman, Razi University, Bu-Ali Sina University, Payam-e Noor University, Urmia University, Babol Noshirvani University of Technology, Malek Ashtar University of Technology, Mazandaran University, Shahroud University, Sahand University of Technology, Zanjan University, Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, and Yazd University are present in the Leiden ranking", he added.
Scientific Impact
Dr. Dehqani observed: "in the scientific impact indicator, almost all of the universities of the country (except for five universities) have had a better performance with regards to ranking in comparison with last year. University of Tehran which is the top university of the country was promoted from 156th in 2019 to 140th in 2020. Dr. Dehqani continued: "in the scientific diplomacy indicator no significant growth is observable in the ranks of the universities of the country in general. However, the best rank of the universities of the country changed from 212 to 201. The following table shows the rankings of the universities of the country in the scientific diplomacy indicator.

The best rank among the universities of the country is earned by University of Tehran which was promoted from 212 in 2019 to 201 in 2020.
